Hologram Spandex Fabrics: How Do You Maintain The Integrity?

Whether you have a child who is in dance or have the fabric incorporated into theater costumes, hologram spandex fabrics can really make an outfit pop with shimmering personality and visual appeal. This unique material, which is surface-printed with holographic details, is no doubt beautiful, but it can also be a little intimidating when it comes to taking care of the fabric so it doesn't lose its shine and sparkle. The last thing you want is to see that fabulous shine and sparkle disappear. Check out a few pointers to keep in mind with your holographic spandex pieces to keep them looking spectacular for the long term.

Keep the fabric clean by spot cleaning most of the time.

Spot cleaning is going to be your very best tactic to use on this special kind of spandex fabric. The material has been layered with an initial metallic coat and then holographic components, so the general spin in a washing machine can be enough to break away some of the flashy components. It is best to use a damp, soft washcloth to do spot cleaning when the fabric has a spot that is soiled. Don't bother trying to wash the entire garment; only the areas that need cleaning.

Use cotton guards to protect the fabric from stains.

One of the biggest problems with the spot-cleaning rule is you won't be washing out any set-in sweat stains or odors with this method. It is best to try to avoid these types of stains from the beginning instead of having to try to get them out after the fact and risk ruining the fabric. Make sure the inside of the fabric is protected by buttoned-in cotton guards under the arms. The guards can be removed and washed. If your garment is not outfitted with these features, it is best to wear a thin cotton shirt beneath it for protection against sweat stains.

Never iron, dry clean, or dry your garment in the dryer.

Heat of any form will be the perfect enemy of your flashy spandex garments with their holographic embellishments. Therefore, it is best to steer clear of irons, clothes dryers, and even professional dry cleaning that often relies on heat. Heat will break down the printed-on embellishments of your garment, so even a short run in a dryer or press with a low-heat iron can be enough to really degrade the flashy embellishments.
